With the climate crisis predicted to make many parts of the planet uninhabitable, Camp Paradise will transform our understanding of how to deliver ecosystem restoration in locations affected by climate change, including land damaged by wildfires.
Next camp: October 11 -20, 2019, for more information visit:
Location: Camp Paradise is in Butte County, approximately 70 miles north of the California state capitol of Sacramento
About the camp
Camp Paradise is a mobile camp that serves multiple locations in and around the area known as “The Camp Fire Burn Scar”. It is not a permanent camp in a fixed location but rather takes the form of pop-up camps and ‘action days’, providing opportunities for Campers to join local people for educational experiences in regenerative design, ecological restoration, community organizing and permaculture gardening.
What to expect
This is a collaborative, long-term restoration initiative being delivered by local environmental and community groups in conjunction with our partner, The Camp Fire Restoration Project. As Camp Paradise develops partnerships and community sites to work with, Camp Paradise will host camps to deliver large-scale permaculture action days, mobilizing hundreds of volunteers and Campers.
Camp Paradise partners with local permaculture farms and sites to host Campers and then choose a public location in need of ecological repair. During an action day, Campers work with local schools, downtown public spaces, businesses and community centers to restore soil and water cycles. Camp Paradise adopts a variety of different ecosystem restoration techniques, including planting fruit trees for food and shade, planting cover crop and native plants, creating earthworks and water systems, and building dry-composting toilets.
Volunteer action days – tree planting – water retention – bio-remediation – compost making – community building – fire prevention – soil restoration – erosion prevention – regenerative entrepreneurialism
Camping – kitchen – learning centre – composting toilets – outdoor shower – water filtration system – wellness/healing space
What the camp is looking for
Camp Paradise is fundraising to secure property for a Main Resource Hub and to sustain the ongoing operations of the education and training programs, staff and experts, which include regular camps and action days. Please contact Camp Paradise if you have fundraising expertise and can assist in this area. Camp Paradise is also looking for volunteer graphic designers and web developers to design public education online and print materials.
The vision is to restore 150,000 acres of land affected by the devastating fire, create healthy ecosystems with sustainable local food sources, build fire safe homes and buildings, create green jobs, and teach local communities about ecosystem restoration.
This collective action will create a sustainable and regenerative model with new systems for disaster response, resilient communities, and landscape restoration that inspires a culture shift.
