Arthur Nooren – An introduction

Arthur Nooren, at camp Altiplano

Dear ERC-enthousiasts,

My name is Arthur Nooren and I have just joined the Ecosystem Restoration Camp on the ground level where Adam, Ricardo, Robin and I are setting up the garden to feed and the accommodation to house the volunteers joining the ERC in September. I am 24 years old and I was just recently studying Plant Sciences in Wageningen, the Netherlands.

A relevant experience I had there was starting up the Wageningen Student Farm association with a few friends. We were given access to a degraded piece of land on campus with no soil life or organic matter to speak of. And although desertification was certainly not an issue, we had the chance to try out different techniques of restoring the land. I´ve now quit my studies and past on the student farm, which now includes over 40 students who are growing vegetables, keeping bees and brewing beer!

When I learned about the Ecosystem Restoration Camps initiative, I immediately knew this would be a great challenge and a natural next step for me. I love that it is in the start-up phase, as that is my favourite phase, and I love that it is about growing food, as this is my main interest. On top of that I believe that ecosystem restoration is one of the most important things to do in the world today. I am very eager to learn all I can on this journey toward a beautiful and vibrant ecosystem.
